The Schwarzkopf Europe Award of 2017 will go to the EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly for supporting the integrity of the different institutions of the European Union and for upholding the European idea in her work. She will give a speech at the award ceremony on Monday, 24th April in Berlin, which is open to the public.

“Since many years Emily O’Reilly is an inspiration for young people. She has become a role model for the European youth through her tiredless work against the erosion of the European Union”, says André Schmitz-Schwarzkopf, the chairman of the board of the Schwarzkopf Foundatiom.

Eaxctly for this reason she was chosen as this year’s awardee by the young international jury. With her speech on Monday in the Representation of the European Commission she will address them and the audience in return.

“The creation of the union was for some a poetic act, an act of redemption an act of hope, and fundamentally an act of love but it was and is also about trade and tariffs, security and cross border migration, the most unpoetic parts of daily life and of international co-operation. Maintaining the idealism and the vision of the early years of the union, keeping the poetry alive and meaningful is the challenge.”
