77 tapes were created in talks with his mother Marie in the 1990s about her survival in the Nazi period in Berlin underground. They produced a transcript of more than 1,000 pages from which Hermann Simon, together with the author Irene Stratenwerth, developed and published an autobiographical report. Marie Simon died on 16th September 1998 in Berlin.

What does it mean to have to get through every day in National Socialist Berlin? You need false papers, safe hiding places and above all people who help you. Marie Simon tried in vain to escape by a fake marriage or to flee to Palestine via Bulgaria. She found refuge in the artist milieu and lived together with a Dutch foreign worker. Again and again they saved their unusual courage and their repartee. It is the authentic account of an extraordinary woman whose unconditional will to live was unbreakable.

We talk to Hermann Simon about his mother’s experiences during National Socialism. “How did the ever-growing anti-Semitism affect her youth?”, “How did she manage to escape the regime and how did life in the Berlin Underground?” And “Are now all traces of the fascist system removed from our society ? “. We are pleased about the willingness of Dr. Hermann Simon, to find answers to these and other questions with us and our guests.

We look forward to your participation and ask you to register until 21.09. online (see below) or by e-mail.
