The political discourse in the public media. With Dr. Peter Frey
Peter Frey.

The amount of information and the number of distributing platforms is constantly increasing. But where do the important, societal debates still take place today – and how are they managed?

In democracies, media fulfill basic functions: They are intended to inform the population, to contribute to public opinion formation through diversity of opinion, criticism and discussion and thus to enable participation. This applies in particular to the public service media. In various formats with long reach and resonance, topics are set and debated in the ZDF, in talk shows, on breakfast television, in reportage formats or in news broadcasts. But how are topics selected, who decides what kind of debate is currently going on?

Recently, there was criticism of talk shows: It is too often discussed on the subject of refugees and integration, even more than talking to those affected, also prevail here often an “alarmed keynote”, the right-wing populists play in the hands, the critics. Other relevant issues such as housing shortages, care needs, or the future of the European Union are hardly addressed.

What do political talk shows do for social debates, what can be improved? How does ZDF contribute to civic education and opinion formation – which groups are reached and which are not? What role do the successful satirical formats play as mediators of political content and attitudes? Which digital offers are there, how are they used? What measures are there to reach a younger audience? We would like to discuss these and other questions with you and Peter Frey.

We look forward to your participation and ask you to register until 12.09. online (see below) or by e-mail.
