Even though racism is inseparable from European history and the continents‘ colonial past, the idea of Europe as a „colorblind continent“ has been central to the continents‘ narrative. In her book ‘European Others: Queering Ethnicity in Postnational Europe.’ (2011), our speaker Fatima El-Tayeb, Professor for Literature and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego, examines how racialized communities in Europe produce new forms of identity and activism as tension between a growing non-white, non-Christian population and essentialist definitions of Europeanness grows.

Based on her work of the past fifteen years, Fatima El-Tayeb will speak about decolonizing processes that still need to find alignment with a postmigrant and non-essentialist understanding of Europeanness. Furthermore, she will discuss the integral role of Europeans of Colour for the continents past, present, and, future.

The event “Decolonizing Europe“ is hosted by the project and Instagram channel Postmigrant Europe (@postmigrant_europe) and the peer education network Understanding Europe. It is part of the European Summer School for Understanding Europe peer educators.

The discussion will be moderated by Nozizwe Dube, Young European of the Year 2017, and is going to be held in English.

The digital lecture will be streamed via the Schwarzkopf Foundation Youtube channel. Questions may be asked in writing during the event. A registration is not necessary.
