After the parliamentary elections in France - What happens next?

We are delighted to invite you to the discussion event „After the parliamentary elections in France – What’s next?“ with Jacob Ross. The event will take place on 10 September 2020 at 5.30 pm at the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe, Sophienstraße 28/29, 10178 Berlin.

The results of the EU elections on 9 June led to a political crisis in France, prompting President Macron to call new elections. Surprisingly, the left-wing alliance became the strongest force in the second round of voting, while the Rassemblement National fell back to third place. Despite the initial relief of many, the question now arises as to what a governing majority might look like in a country that has little experience with coalitions. Specifically, it remains to be seen how and with whom the left-wing alliance, which was formed primarily to ward off a further shift to the right, intends to govern – and what impact this will have on France itself, but also on the EU and Germany.

We are delighted to welcome Jacob Ross, Research Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations, to the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe on Tuesday 10 September at 17:30.

Together with you and Jacob Ross, we want to discuss the following questions, among others: What does the French election result mean for the formation of a government? What impact will it have on European and Franco-German co-operation? How should the success of the left-wing electoral alliance be categorised? Will the right-wing camp actually emerge weakened from the election? And what could a future French domestic and foreign policy look like?

We look forward to your participation. We kindly ask you to register online by 09.09.2024.
