We are delighted to invite you to a screening of the documentary „Story of a Love – Freya“, followed by a conversation with the film’s director, Antje Starost. The screening will take place on Monday, 22 September 2025 at 6:00 pm at Kino Central. After the film and discussion, we warmly invite you to join us for a small reception.
At the age of 18, Freya Deichmann’s life changes profoundly when she meets Helmuth James von Moltke. “I saw him and my heart stood still.” He becomes the love of her life—a love that begins in the summer of 1929 and must endure the trials of everyday life under the Third Reich.
The most dramatic period is Helmuth’s imprisonment: a time marked by hope and farewell, where each day could be his last. Their great fortune lies in the nearly daily exchange of letters, smuggled by prison chaplain Harald Poelchau. It is a love born in resistance, one that does not end with the execution of the beloved.
Actors Nina Hoss and Ulrich Matthes lend their voices to the correspondence between Freya and Helmuth. These deeply personal letters are extraordinary historical documents, whose emotional power is heightened when we encounter the 90-year-old Freya in the film, spirited, expressive, full of Rhineland humour and a zest for life.
After the war, the former family estate of Kreisau becomes Krzyżowa. Through a fortunate twist of history, the “New Kreisau” emerges in 1989, a symbol of German-Polish reconciliation and today one of Europe’s largest international youth meeting centres. Freya played a key role in its founding. It is remarkable how the European ideals of the “Kreisau Circle” are thus realised in the present day.
This is a true story, not a novel or fictionalised account. The letters reflect lived reality in the very moment of its experience.
We would be very pleased to welcome you and kindly ask for registration by 20 September 2025, either online or via email. Admission is free.
