We are delighted to invite you to the event “I Didn’t Dare to Ask.” The event will take place on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Place of Information, Cora-Berliner-Straße 1, 10117 Berlin.
The Pfeil family comes from Trier. In 1940, the National Socialists deported them from their hometown to occupied Poland. Christian Pfeil was born (presumably) in the Lublin Ghetto in January 1944. His parents and siblings were forced to perform slave labour in concentration camps. After their liberation in 1945, they returned to Germany with the baby.
During his childhood, Pfeil experienced exclusion and hostility. At the age of 26, he opened a restaurant in Trier and successfully performed as a musician, becoming a well-known local figure. In the 1990s, far-right extremists threatened him because of his anti-fascist activism.
In 2015, Christian Pfeil began to confront and document his family’s traumatic history and to speak publicly about it, including at the European Parliament and the United Nations. It is particularly important to him to raise public awareness of the persecution of Sinti and Roma and of its consequences, which continue to this day. For several years, his nephew Sacha Höhn has supported him in his advocacy work.
