On Monday, October 16, 2023, at 5:30 PM, we are pleased to welcome Ingke Brodersen to our foundation for a reading of her new book „Lebewohl, Martha.“
24 Disappeared. Deported from the house where Ingke Brodersen lives. A „Judenhaus.“ Some flee, others hide. The historian tells the stories of those. And of those who seek refuge today.
Hanns-Stephan is twelve years old when, in 1939, he stands on the platform at London Liverpool Station. He is saved by the Kindertransport. His mother dies in the hail of bombs. His father, Siegfried Jacob, goes into hiding and survives. He owns the house where Jews displaced from elsewhere are forcibly relocated. A so-called „Jewish house,“ similar to those found in other European countries. When Ingke Brodersen moves into an apartment on the fourth floor of this very house, she knows nothing of Martha, Clara, and Bertha. Through an impressive research effort, she reconstructs the life paths of those persecuted. And she turns her attention to those who are displaced today: Safed from Bosnia or Aziz and Rana from Kabul. Thus, her book is a moving testimony of remembrance and lived compassion.
Historian Ingke Brodersen was the editor of the political book series „rororo aktuell“ and was in charge of Rowohlt Berlin Publishers from 1990. She edited a multilingual European magazine for the Goethe Institute. For eight years, she conducted democracy and communication training at Berlin schools. Since the 1990s, she has been supporting refugees in their integration process. The history of German Jews is often the subject of her numerous publications. Her new book „Farewell, Martha“ was published in April 2023 by Kanon Verlag.
We are very pleased to welcome Ingke Brodersen on October 16, 2023, at 5:30 PM for a reading at our foundation. Together with you and Ingke Brodersen, we would like to learn more about the history of the house on Berchtesgadener Straße and its former residents.
We are looking forward to your participation. We kindly request a binding registration online byOctober 15, 2023.
