The rise of right-wing and far-right parties in Germany and Europe

This event is part of the accompanying programme of the Inge Deutschkron Award.

We are very pleased to invite you to the discussion event “The Rise of Right-Wing and Far-Right Parties in Germany and Europe” with Andreas Kemper. The event will take place on September 30, 2024, at 5:30 PM at the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe, Sophienstraße 28/29, 10178 Berlin.

The European elections this past June, along with the elections in the three eastern German states, clearly showed once again that the positions of the far-right in Germany and Europe are no longer a fringe issue. Parties and individuals who deny human-caused climate change, question the European Union, and openly promote racist demands have gained influence not only in Germany but across Europe and now hold seats in many national parliaments. These changes are impacting not only the political discourse but are also felt in social reality. Racist and anti-Semitic acts are on the rise, and it seems that societal divisions are becoming increasingly entrenched.
These developments raise pressing questions: How have right-wing parties managed to become increasingly stronger? What strategies are they using, and where are they particularly successful? How can democratic societies counter the growing influence of far-right movements? What role do misinformation, social media, and populist rhetoric play in this? And what responsibility do politics and civil society bear in addressing these challenges?

We are pleased to welcome Andreas Kemper, independent sociologist and publicist, on Monday, September 30 at 5:30 PM at the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe to discuss this topic.

We would be very happy to have you attend. Please confirm your participation by registering online by September 29, 2024.
