When the Optimist Doesn’t Win: Transatlantic Relations in Transition

We are very pleased to welcome you to the event "When the Optimist Doesn’t Win: Transatlantic Relations in Transition" with Lisa Stappenbeck, German Federal Ministry of Defense. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe.

The transatlantic relationship has long been a symbol of stability, shared values, and close cooperation between Europe and the United States, particularly in matters of defense policy. However, Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024 not only marks a turning point in U.S. domestic and foreign policy but also presents new challenges for relations between Europe and the United States.

Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO for its unequal burden-sharing and has called into question the long-term U.S. commitment to the alliance. Additionally, his stance on economic and trade issues—through protectionist measures and the rejection of multilateral agreements—further tests transatlantic cooperation.

Against this backdrop, key questions arise: What challenges does Trump’s re-election pose for the relationship between Europe and the U.S., particularly in areas such as security, trade, and geopolitical cooperation? How did the U.S.’s global role change during Trump’s first presidency, and what shifts can be expected in his second term? How should Europe, the EU, and NATO adjust their strategies to respond to evolving political conditions? What could a more autonomous European security and defense policy look like? Is there still room for optimism in transatlantic relations? And what might the future of these relations hold?

We are very pleased to welcome Lisa Stappenbeck, German Federal Ministry of Defense, to discuss these pressing issues on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe.

We look forward to your participation and kindly ask for a binding registration by April 8, 2025, either online or via email.
