Europe in an Age of Uncertainty: Shaping Europe’s Future in Times of Geopolitical Tension

Thirty years after Sweden joined the European Union, the bloc finds itself at a crossroads once again. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, growing tensions between global powers and trade conflicts are confronting Europe with fundamental questions: What is Europe’s role in the world? How can it ensure security, resilience, and competitiveness in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment? How does the EU’s enlargement policy come into play?

Against the backdrop of these challenges, Germany and Sweden are deepening their partnership within the EU and NATO. Both countries share key priorities such as strengthening European and NATO defence capabilities and securing EU’s competitiveness and future prosperity, whilst reaffirming their dedication to democracy, human rights and a rules-based international order.

The world order that has long been taken for granted is being shaken to its foundations, requiring Germany, Sweden, and their European partners to reassess and discuss how to move forward in European foreign and defence policy.

At this pivotal moment for European security and cooperation, we are therefore pleased to welcome Jessica Rosencrantz, Sweden’s Minister for EU Affairs, and Gunther Krichbaum, Minister of State for Europe at the German Federal Foreign Office, for a conversation on the future of Europe. Starting from the anniversary of Sweden’s EU membership, the discussion will look ahead: What are the shared priorities of Germany and Sweden? How can the EU remain a strong, competitive and value-driven actor in a world marked by uncertainty? How can we ensure European security and cohesion in times of growing external and internal pressure? What is the role of NATO, and what contribution must Europe make to its own defence?

We look forward to your participation and kindly ask you to register by 10 September 2025, either online or via email.

The event will be held in English.
