European B/orders along the Balkan Refugee Route and Europeanness

In this moderated discussion we will talk about narratives on Europeanness and the implication of EU border regimes along the Balkan Refugee Route in the larger context of European integration.

How have European integration processes transformed asylum, immigration and overall bordering policies as well as narratives on (European) belonging? How do European policies reinforce racism and Islamophobia and produce whiteness through racialized border regimes? We will also explore how new political networks and social movements for solidarity confront the normalization of far-right regimes across the region.

Piro Rexhepi holds a PhD in Politics from University of Strathclyde. His research focuses on decoloniality, sexuality and Islam. His recent work on racism and borders along the Balkan Refugee Route has been published in a range of media in and out of academia including the International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Critical Muslims and the Guardian among others.

This digital lecture and discussion will be moderated by Melina Borčak, journalist and filmmaker from Berlin.
